Chapter 12
Addy touched one fancy box after another. The packages scattered over her bed were wrapped in such finery, she hesitated to peel off the ribbons and paper.
"Need some help?" Aaron was leaning against the pillared entrance to her bedroom, watching her.
"Could be. I can hardly bring myself to ruin such a beautiful sight as this."
"But what's inside is even nicer. And besides, another delivery is coming. A little something I ordered for you. Better get started on these if you want mine."
He was spoiling her whether he'd admit it or not. Addy smiled sublimely, the lipstick she'd put on feeling a little naughty on her lips. As for the other makeup, she was still wearing what the store lady had put on for her the day before. She had slept in it, certain she'd never be able to make herself look so wonderful again. She'd slept in her stockings and would have slept in her dress, too, had she not been fearful of smashing the petticoats and creasing the skirt.
Aaron lifted a box and tossed it her way. Her fingers trembling with excitement, she carefully unwrapped it and withdrew a silky green top and matching pants.
"Oh my," Addy sighed, holding them to her. "Think I'll wear this the next time we go out."
"I don't think so. Wearing pajamas on the street is liable to get you the kind of attention I don't want you to have."
Addy laid them in a sweet-smelling drawer, next to her beloved china doll. Reluctantly, she handed Aaron the shirt he'd loaned her, just before he'd gone to meet his business friend James. She had fallen asleep before Aaron got back, but a kiss in the dark seemed more real than dream.
"I guess I won't be needing this, since I've got my own pajamas to wear now. Thank you for the loan, Aaron." When he sniffed at the fabric, Addy hurried to offer, "Want me to wash it? It's all wrinkled up and a bit smelly from all that perfume I put on. Afraid I got carried away, almost bathed myself in the stuff."
Tempted as he was to keep the shirt just so he could sneak a whiff whenever he wanted, Aaron passed it back to Addy instead. "You keep it. Looks a lot better on you than me."
She hugged it to her as if it were a treasure beyond worth. Feeling a need to touch her that he couldn't resist, he took her in his arms, crushing the shirt between them. He was about to throw caution to the wind and kiss her as senseless as she'd rendered him when the buzzer signaling company from below intruded.
"Must be that delivery," he murmured, threading his fingers through the cascade of her hair. "Tell you what." Aaron handed her another package. "I'll answer the door while you tear into this and try on what's inside."
On his way out he glanced back to see the painstaking care she gave to the bow and wrapping, trying to avoid even a tiny rip.
